Series review: Runes by Ednah Walters

Here is what Becky has to say about reading this series:
I've been devouring books in the Runes series - read 4 sequels since finishing the first book and each within one day!

READING ORDER:
Grimnirs series, featuring Cora and Echo, is a spinoff the Runes series and is read as part of the entire series in this order:

Runes (book 1)
Immortals (book 2)
Grimnirs (book 3-bridges book 2 and 4)
Seeress (book 4)
Souls (book 5)
Witches: (book 6)

Book 1: Runes

Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father's disappearance, her mother's erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James-a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin's dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can't stop thinking about him. Half the time, she's not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about him. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only is she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life

Becky's Review

Create and collect all you know about Valkyries into your mind, got it? Now chuck it all out of the window. Ednah Walters has truly developed and indeed adapted their role and powers to fit into a rather engaging teenage romance with a good dash of runic magic, mystery and a bit of mayhem drama thrown in.

I don't usually read YA supernatural romances and I quite honestly didn't see the HUGE punch coming in at the end as the blurb and indeed the title don't indicate how much norse mythology you are going to get out of this story. And I am pleased to say I wasn't disappointed.

If you are fans of A.K Morgen's Ragnarok Prophesies featuring Dace/Ari/Freki/Geri or Amailia Dillin's Fate series featuring Thor/Eve then you will enjoy the Runes trilogy - yes there is more and I immediately downloaded not just Book 2 but also Book 3.

Book 2: Immortals

Nothing can stop Raine Cooper when she wants something.

Raine finally knows that her gorgeous neighbor, Torin St. James, is a legend straight out of Norse mythology, and that her feelings for him are strong. Torin is crazy about Raine too, breaking the one rule he lives by: Never fall for a mortal. The problem is he no longer remembers her, his memories erased by Norns-Norse destiny deities-to punish her for defying them.

So Raine comes up with a plan...

She will make Torin forget his one rule a second time and fall in love with her all over again. But she quickly learns that well-laid plans do not work when dealing with deities and supernatural beings. Desperate, Raine makes choices that could not only tear her and Torin further apart, but lead to the destruction of everything and everyone she loves.

Becky's Review

Another heart wrenching, gut gripping, jaw dropping roller coaster ride of a story involving so many surprises, thrills and shocks that you suffer withdrawal symptoms if you put it down for a minute.
Still really love the main character of Raine, still really fancy Torin and I am even warming to Andris after the action and drama in this book.
Very high quality norse fantasy with lots of relatable content that teenagers and more can connect with as they read and enjoy the book. We also learn much more about the norse mythical world that it exists alongside Raine's and it features a lot more than Valkyries. The excitement is hot, the tension is earth shattering and the costs are high as Raine learns that her life will never be the same again in more ways than one.

Book 3: Grimnirs - A Runes Novel

Straight out of the psych ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn't want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The guy she's loved from a distance for years moves away without saying goodbye. So yes, she's nursing a serious heartbreak. It's no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing.The connection defies logic. Even better, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Too bad Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. He is also a soul reaper. A Grimnir.
The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life.

Becky's Review:

Oh. My. Word. First Torin is my dream male Valkyrie and now Echo! Albeit not a true Valkyrie. Two hot characters and another action packed, thrilling, exciting and heart stopping storyline. A whole new side to the mythical norse world that Ednah has created is revealed and just like Cora we have to decide whether it is simply black and white between Valkyries and Grimnirs, friends and enemies or if there is the smallest chance that love can be found in the grey areas. Whether good can be found in the darkest places.

I enjoyed this new spin off and tie-in with the Runes series I finished it in one day! Started it at 6 and read it through to midnight only stopping for tea. A highly recommended read for current and new fans.
It is not only refreshing to explore this world through the eyes of different characters but it also adds a new layer of imagination and connection between reader and story. Plus for those who didnt fall in love with Torin, Ednah has another chance to sieze their hearts in the dark and alluring Echo.

Book 4: Seeress

Raine Cooper is certain of two things: her love for Torin St. James and her destiny to be a powerful seeress. But when she starts having premonitions, they are unclear and disturbing. Worse, they involve Torin. With her mother gone, her father dying, and her best friend in Hel, she is not sure who to talk to.

But when the visions become more personal and she foresees her future with Torin threatened by someone from his past, Raine becomes desperate for answers. Just her luck two new students arrive at her school and they seem to have answers. When with them, her powers are enhanced and her visions become clear. There is only one problem: Torin forbids Raine to see the two girls.

Can their love survive without trust?

Book 5: Souls

Eighteen-year-old Cora Jemison knows what it's like to date a soul reaper. There are no Friday night movies, no school dances, and no stolen kisses between classes. It totally sucks! What makes it even worse, souls pop up when she least expects it. The last one is not her fault, but it all adds up to zero quality time with her super hot, scythe-carrying boyfriend, Echo.

Since Cora was etched with special runes by an evil Immortal, she understands why souls are drawn to her. She makes the best of it by helping souls find closure while Echo escorts them to the realm of the dead. Perfect partners, until a dark soul visits Cora in the dead of the night and Echo decides her soul-helping days are over.

Cora can either listen to Echo or follow her instincts. To make matters worse, other reapers start stalking her, demanding she hand over the soul. Even her Valkyrie friends think she's gone too far. But something sinister is coming their way, and the soul is the key to saving her town, her friends, and her relationship with Echo. Can she convince Echo to see things her way before it's too late?

Becky's Review

Yet again I finished this book in 1 whole day because the drama, the action, the secrets, the thrills, the danger and the excitement made it impossible to put down. It was so much fun to see the world again through Cora and I am now definitely more in love with Echo than Torin which surprised me. The plot and story was really well written and I must admitt my heart weeps each time a new threat surfaces to threaten the peace and happiness of Cora/Echoe and Raine/Torin but seeing how much these guys will go through to protect the ones they love and make them happy is always the silverlining in each dark chapter.

I also love the way this unrelated family of Immortals, Valkyries, Grimnirs and even Witches are forming together through each danger and how both Cora and Raine are developing their powers and fighting to remain true to themselves no matter what.
I also really like the new character introduced in Souls and I do hope he becomes a member of this unqiue band of friends and lovers.
Cant wait to read Witches - I have thoroughly enjoyed reading every book in this series.
