The Top Ten Fantasy Movies There is a lot of crossover
between science fiction and fantasy movies. I have
stuck strictly with fantasy and have been liberal
within the genre in that it covers a lot of different
types of fantasy from childrens to swords and sorcery
and animation. |
| 1. |
|
The
Wizard of OZ - 1939 - It has been almost 70
years and this movie still stands at the top of
the heap. No doubt you have seen it several times.
But as far as fantasy movies goes this movie is
the top of all time.
|
| 2. |
The
Return of the King - - This is the best of the
three movies and it wraps up the whole series. |
| 3. |
Excalibur
- This movie is a retelling of the legend of King
Arthur and it is an inspired piece of work. The
whole thing reads like a dream. It is simply a masterpiece.
If you haven't seen this movie you are missing out
on something special. I consider this to be John
Boorman's (DIRECTOR) Greatest achievement. It is
his Citizen Kane. |
| 4. |
The
Princess Bride - Directed by Rob Reiner this
movie is simply maginificent. The first half hour
is probably the most wonderful half hour ever put
on film. It just manages to transform you to a wonderful
fantasy place. |
| 5. |
Labyrinth
- Starring a young Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie
as the bad-guy. This movie blends muppet special
effects with Bowieesque music and a great story.
This is a movie that brings delight to children
and adults alike. There are so many little things
in this movie that will just amaze you. After watching
it several times you start to notice little things. |
| 6. |
Indiana
Jones and the Last Crusade - Without a doubt
this is the best movie in a series of fantastic
movies. |
| 7. |
Dragonheart
- Another king-arthur esque movie and it was seriously
underrated when it first came out. One of the unique
things about this movie is that you get to know
the dragon very well. (Voiced by Sean Connery) |
| 8. |
Legend
- I am not a big fan of Tom Cruise but I am a big
fan of Mia Sara who stars opposite him in this film.
Directed by Ridley Scott (Alien) This film is just
a magnificent treat for the eyes. The sets are lavish
and truly transport you to another world. The demon
(Played by Tim Curry) is one of the most memorable
creatures ever to grace the silver screen. |
| 9. |
The
Dark Crystal - While I am not a big fan of muppetry
and puppetry this movie is a triumph of imagination.
The Jim Henson studios manage to create a fantasy
world that is rich in texture and place into it
an epic quest. A feast for the imagination and the
eyes. |
| 10. |
|
Time
Bandits - A young boy accidently joins a band
of dwarves as they jump from time-period to time-period
looking for treasure to steal.
One review of this movie raves:
Overstuffed, Over the top, and wildly wonderful!
And this movie is all those things. It is a masterpiece
of imagination pushed beyond its own limits.
