The Gathering Storm By Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson
The Gathering Storm (Wheel of Time)
This is a bit of a strange and bittersweet book release. Part of me mourns the loss of Robert Jordan and part of me looks forward to the climax of the whole Wheel of Time series of books.
There is an interesting yet not unexpected turn of events with this book however. Read more......
The Last book that's not a last book
Jordan has given the fantasy world a remarkable world and a remarkable series of books and his untimely death was a real blow to the epic fantasy community. There was a little bit of solace in knowing that he had been working diligently on a final novel . But, in a strange twist of irony, the series that never ended still isn't ending. The Wheel of Time books were often criticized for being too long and for never really coming to a completion.
This thinking was thought to be over with the announcement of this last book but.... it seems that this isn't the last book after all. The publisher has announced that Jordan and Sanderson have generated so much material that the final installment of the Wheel of Time series will actually be three novels long. This book (The Gathering Storm) is the first of these final three.
How do I feel about this extension of the series?
This is real easy for me. I believe that epic fantasy is a metaphor for life and that means that the journey is everything, and the completion of a goal actually means very little. These Wheel of Time books are about experiencing a world created by Robert Jordan and I love that.
